Bean Watches: Wonka (2023)

Hello all!

I'm back with another fabulous blog post! Yesterday I watched the new Wonka film with my mum and sister, and thought I'd give a spoiler free review of the film. So let's dive into it!

Wonka released on the 8th of December (in the UK anyways) in 2023. The film itself is based on Wonka's origin story. How he got his factory, how he invented various chocolate flavours, and of course how he was associated with Oompa Loompas!

The film itself has a star studded cast including the likes of Timothy Chamelet as Willy Wonka, Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa, as well as Olivia Coleman, Matthew Baynton, Matt Lucas and Rowan Atkinson.

The Good: The film itself had an amazing soundtrack with lots of catchy songs (all of which are available to stream on Spotify). I especially loved the little hints of the original Gene Wilder songs that were present in the film's soundtrack.

The Bad: I will be honest, I did struggle occasionally to grasp why the film was as long as it was. I felt like there were some moments of the film that did not need to be in the film at all. Also, it seemed to me like Wonka's backstory had changed from the Tim Burton's Charlie & the Chocolate Factory - where if you remember, Wonka's backstory in that was shown via flashbacks.

And finally the rating! The film gains a 4.5 beans (out of 5) overall. As I said the soundtrack, the costume and the visual effects were amazing. However, I do wish that they stuck to the backstory that they had for the 2005 version of Charlie & the Chocolate factory.

So there it is! I hope you enjoyed my spoiler-free review of the film! If you watched it, what did you think? And if you haven't had the chance to watch it, would you go and watch it?

Until next time,

Sadie
